Benefits of Medicine Buddha Practice
In Buddhist teachings, the Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajyaguru, is revered for his healing abilities.
In Tibetan Thangkas, he is often depicted as a blue-coloured Buddha holding two significant objects: a medicine bowl in his left hand, symbolising his power to heal physical illnesses, and the king of herbs, in his right. According to the Medicine Buddha Sutra, the Medicine Buddha made twelve vows to alleviate the world's suffering from poverty and ailments, bestowing good health and prosperity to support our Dharma practice on the path to Enlightenment. As such, many believe he can relieve physical ailments and bring peace and clarity to the mind.
In this article, we explore how practising with the Medicine Buddha can be helpful.
Who is Medicine Buddha?
Medicine Buddha emphasises the internal, particularly the mental causes of illnesses. Buddhism views the body and mind as interconnected, recognising that mental well-being significantly influences physical health. Focusing on the Medicine Buddha, therefore, provides a more holistic approach to caring for both the mental and physical aspects, enhancing overall wellness.
Medicine Buddha practice involves a combination of mantra recitation and visualisation. Chanting the Medicine Buddha mantra is central to the practice. The repetitive nature helps focus the mind, reducing stress and anxiety. Beyond calming the mind, the mantra is believed to help us feel connected to something larger than ourselves, the divine, offering solace and peace.
Visualisation complements the mantra. Visualise the Medicine Buddha’s radiating healing light enhancing our recitation experience. This will have a positive effect on our body and mind, working in harmony with the mantra to promote overall well-being.
