Manifesting Inner and Outer Wealth

A teaching by Singha Rinpoche extracted from Dewdrops January 2008

Everyone is very interested in wealth, but having inner wealth is more than just having lots of money. It is having a heart.

When we are listening to the Dharma, we need to prevent ourselves from having the three faults. Do not be like a leaky pot. Otherwise, no matter how much Dharma we hear, we will get no result. Any inspiration received from the teaching would have fizzled out by the time you reach home. This is the case even for people who have received refuge but do not know how to cultivate the Dharma. They will remain much as they were, suffering as before without that all important inner wealth.

The main thing is to add Dharma into your lifestyle. Instead of gossiping, try to discuss what you have learnt during teachings at the suppers you have afterwards or when you have a little time with your friends. Do not be selective and choose only parts of the Dharma to apply.

For those of you just beginning your Dharma study, there may be some of you who choose to practice certain aspects only to 'try a little bit first'. But what's most important and effective is to accept Dharma as it is and apply it entirely into life. Only this way will you improve. Throw out your old habituations and start life anew, after all, it was because they didn't work in the first place that you sought answers in the Dharma anyway! If you cling on to your old ways, then you will simply be clinging on to pain and suffering. A Dharma centre is the place where you can learn the new culture of Dharma so just relax and work towards having a heart rich in Dharma cultivation.

The second fault is to be like a dirty pot - no matter how much pure Dharma is poured in, the end result is stained. Don't flavour the Dharma with your own interpretations. When pure Dharma gets polluted, it becomes meaningless. Just think of a pot used to cook curry and then without washing, you fill it with water to make tea. Trust me when I say that the tea will not taste good!

The third fault is to be an overturned pot which doesn't allow any Dharma to enter at all. If your heart is all closed up, nothing can get in. Sometimes due to not understanding or misunderstanding, people decide not to visit a Dharma centre anymore. That's a real pity because they fail to reflect on themselves and simply fault everyone else instead.

So always be mindful not to have these three faults.

Just like outer wealth, we must want to have inner wealth.

Otherwise, it simply won't come to you. If only people applied the same passion that they have for 4D to becoming Buddha, they will become Buddha in one lifetime! But often, people do not see the benefits of being a Buddha because money 'talks' more loudly. But we only create more suffering for ourselves by focusing solely on money.

Reincarnation is fun! We need to see this and fight for a chance to get a good body, to most importantly be born in a place with Dharma. We must always pray to meet with the Buddhadharma.

In Buddhism, unless you are ordained as monks and nuns, there is no necessity to live a life of austerity. When Guru Rinpoche taught Dharma to heavenly beings, he taught them to put their enjoyments to good use and to transform them into Dharma. Whether we are able to afford luxurious offerings, it is important to visualise modern-day richness as offerings to Buddhas - palaces with modern facilities, new forms of transportation etc. By making such offerings, we transform our own minds. We start to feel wealthy, develop divine pride and confidence and then whatever we touch turns into gold.

We need to love whatever we're doing - even when we are 60 or 70 years old. If you don't like the life you are living, then do something to change it! The only time you can't change what you're doing is when you are lying in the coffin so don’t wait too long! When you feel regal, endowed with grace and confidence, then the good things come naturally. Constantly maintain this thought and be energised to achieve your goals.

This is why Guru Rinpoche gave initiations - so that we can make things manifest as a deity. We need to understand ourselves and ensure that any inspirations we receive manifest as success. In the Guru Puja, we receive light blessings from the Buddhas like divine petrol or energy that infuses our body, speech and mind. By maintaining feelings of happiness and pride, just like your feelings when your Lama steps into your house, you couldn't stop the good things from coming into your life even if you wanted to. Then, you need to remember yourself not much different from a bunch of clouds with no real form and no inherent existence, and then just share your wealth!
